Randomized, Controlled Trial Evaluating a Baby Wash Product on Skin Barrier Function in Healthy, Term Neonates
Summary:
Infant skin has several important functions that include maintenance of skin barrier and protection from infection. These functions rely on an optimum pH level of about 5.5 in the first year of life. Soap and harsh surfactants can raise this pH in infant skin, subsequently disrupting the skin barrier, suggesting that infant skin requires specially formulated products. Upon comparing washing with specified proprietary wash product for babies (Johnson's Baby Top‐to‐Toe Bath) versus washing with water alone, specially formulated baby products were found to be non-inferior to water in cleansing and maintaining skin barrier, demonstrating to be safe to use on newborn skin.
