The Skin Microbiome: Impact of Modern Environments on Skin Ecology, Barrier Integrity, and Systemic Immune Programming

Summary:

As our primary interface, the skin plays an integral role in adapting with the external environment, with the capacity to impact various physiological functions and possibly, our emotions. The diversity and abundance of our skin microbiota is heavily influenced by the ecosystems in which we live. Disturbances in this balanced skin microbiome have been seen in several skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, food allergies, and potential pre-disposition to other inflammatory non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Further research of pathways leading to development and sustenance of a balanced skin microbiome and its commensal communities, are crucial in not only prevention and treatment of inflammatory skin disease, but other systemic conditions.
