Management of Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: The Role of Emollient Therapy
Summary:
Atopic Dermatitis is commonly seen during infancy, at an age when the immune system and epidermal barrier are developing. Flare-ups of atopic dermatitis are commonly managed with topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors. This paper discusses the role of emollients in management of atopic dermatitis, focusing on infants and young children. It explores the moisturizing and protective properties of emollients that aid in hydration of the stratum corneum and support overall skin barrier function.
