Dosing & Usage

For complete directions for use and warnings, always refer to the product insert/booklet provided with the product.

WEEKS 1–2

10–20 pieces/day

One every time there is an urge to smoke

WEEKS 3–4

8–15 pieces/day

One every time there is an urge to smoke

MONTH 2

4–10 pieces/day

One every 2–4 hrs

MONTH 3

2–5 pieces/day

One every 4–8 hrs

MONTHS 4–6

1 piece every time the urge to smoke returns

Patients should not chew more than one piece of NICORETTE® Gum at a time or exceed 20 pieces per day.¹

Reassess your patient if they need to use NICORETTE® Gum longer than:

6 months in the Stop to Quit program
12 months in the REDUCE TO QUIT® program

It is important to complete treatment. If your patient has a cigarette while trying to quit smoking, instruct them to keep using NICORETTE® Gum and keep trying to quit.

If the amount of NICORETTE® Gum your patient is taking does not help them stop smoking, reassess them and explore using more than one type of nicotine replacement therapy at the same time.

Proper Use

Chew the gum properly to be effective and avoid excess side effects

Chew the Gum until the taste becomes strong (typical 1–2 chews)
Rest the Gum between the cheek and gums (1 minute)
Chew and Repeat. After about 30 minutes all the medicine has been released

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Caution: Do not drink acidic beverages (coffee, tea, soft drinks, alcohol, citric juices) 15 minutes prior to using or during use to maximize effectiveness.

DO NOT USE if the blister foil is punctured or damaged.

DO NOT USE IF YOUR PATIENT: Is under 18 years of age; is pregnant or nursing; has a jaw disorder; has heart arrhythmias; has had a heart attack; has angina pectoris; or is allergic to nicotine or to any of the non-medicinal ingredients in the product.

USE WITH CAUTION IF YOUR PATIENT: has/had heart disease, a heart attack, heart pain, irregular heartbeat or a stroke or have ever had high blood pressure, blood circulation problems or treatment for circulation disorders of the brain, asthma, chronic lung problems, throat diseases, thyroid problems, stomach problems, ulcers or inflammation of the esophagus, kidney or liver disease, a history of epilepsy or seizures, diabetes requiring insulin or are taking any prescription medications.

NOTE: Chamomile (a minor flavouring ingredient in the gum) has been documented as rarely causing hypersensitivity reactions, and very rarely anaphylaxis. Cross reactions may occur in people with allergy to the composite family of plants.
