Chemotherapeutic inhibition of supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis development

Objective 

Determine the efficacy of a mouthrinse used as a supplement to regular oral hygiene measures on supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis (N=107).

Methodology

Double-blind, controlled clinical study of healthy male and female subjects (aged 18-60 years) with preexisting plaque and gingivitis but without evidence of periodontitis.

Results

LISTERINE® Antiseptic inhibited the accumulation of supragingival dental plaque by 34.4% (P<0.001) and the development of gingivitis by 33.7% (P<0.001) at 6 months compared to hydroalcohol control.

Conclusion

When used as a supplement to normal oral hygiene following a prophylaxis, LISTERINE® Antiseptic significantly

reduced plaque and gingivitis over a six-month period, without an increase in extrinsic tooth stain.

 

*Subjects followed their usual oral hygiene and dietary habits.
